Many factors help explain the close bond between our two countries. Primary among them is the relatively large number of Danes who, from the late 1800s until around the time of the Second World War, immigrated to the United States. Also, the largest celebration of the Fourth of July outside the U.S. is held every year at Rebild, Denmark. This Danish commemoration of American independence has seen many famous keynote speakers from both countries over the years. Denmark is one of America’s closest allies. Through our active participation in international organizations like the UN and NATO, we work with our U.S. colleagues on solving some of the great global challenges we face today: climate change, sustainable development, eradication of poverty, and the fight against terror. Approximately 800 Danish troops are currently deployed in Afghanistan, laying the foundation upon which the Afghan people can build a better future.
In addition, every year on average half the members of the Danish Government will visit the U.S. to meet with their American counterparts (in 2007 and 2008 the number of Cabinet Ministers to visit the U.S. was 10). Also, a significant number of Members of Congress, among them Speaker Pelosi, Congressman Ed Markey, members of his committee, Senator Barbara Boxer, members of her committee, and Senator John McCain, have been to Greenland to witness first-hand the effects of Climate Change.
The commercial and cultural relations between Denmark and the United States are also very close, and we are particularly proud of the many exchanges between cultural and educational institutions in our two countries and the resultant opportunities to learn from one another.
